Advice from Insiders

Janice
Kumalu is located opposite the Tapawatra rapids, one of the widest and most beautiful rapids in Suriname!
This beautiful tropical resort is special because of its small scale and the fact that the host (also co-founder) belongs to the local Maroon community.
This tour is definitely worth experiencing if you enjoy boating and mountain climbing. The tour can easily be combined with the 5-day Cultural Maroon Trek.

General information
Bus and Boat Ride to Kumalu Dream Island
Your trip to Kumalu Dream Island begins by bus from Paramaribo (Saramaccastraat). You will travel towards Atjoni and from there continue by motorized canoe to Kumalu.
Water Level
During low water levels (end of the dry season), the rapids may cause delays. With this simple wooden regular line boat, it is more common for stops to be made along the way, requiring you to briefly disembark. Therefore, you will arrive in the late afternoon at Kumalu (between 5:00 PM and 6:00 PM, depending on the water level). Visitors with back problems should take this into account.
