Travel Specialist

The ideal thing about the sea turtle evening tour is that you can do it in as little as one day. So even if you only have a short time in Suriname, you can still spot the unique sea turtles.

Another advantage is that the tour takes place close to the city. During the tour you will visit the beautiful beach of Braamspunt, where you will also admire a breathtaking sunset.

The tour is also very educational, and together with the above points, we at Orange Travel recommend this tour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dress Code

Dark Clothing: Sea turtles have blurry vision outside the water, so they are very cautious about anything moving around them. We minimize the chance of being seen by wearing dark (preferably black) clothing, including:

  • Long pants (or convertible pants) so you don’t have to worry about irritating plants, ticks, or mosquitoes during walks.
  • A long-sleeved shirt or jacket for cold weather and mosquitoes.
  • Good, comfortable, and broken-in boots or hiking shoes since we will be walking a distance. Leave new shoes at home; the last thing you want is blisters.

What else to bring:

  • A flashlight or headlamp with red light: This is a must for all the night walks we will take during this tour! Also very handy if you need to find a spot to urinate at night. (There are no toilets on the beach)
  • Camera & well-charged batteries: A camera is essential to capture the beautiful surroundings. Ensure that the batteries are fully charged so you don’t miss memorable moments.
  • Mosquito repellent: To protect yourself from insect bites during the tour.
  • Raincoat/poncho: For unexpected showers.
  • Sunscreen: For protection against the sun.
  • Water shoes/flip-flops: In case you need to walk through water.
  • On request, starting from 4 people.

General information

Formation and Location
Braamspunt is a naturally formed beach of sand and shells that has become clearly visible since 2012. This beach formed after the famous Matapica nesting beach disappeared due to land loss, with sand and clay particles flowing westward with the current. Located on the Surinamese coast, the beaches of Braamspunt have attracted sea turtles for nesting for many years.

Season
The sea turtle season begins around the end of January and lasts until July. Particularly, the month of June is favorable for visiting the beach, as two of the four turtle species that come to Suriname nest during this period. This also provides the chance to see baby turtles crawling on the beach.

Journey from Leonsberg to Braamspunt
The journey begins from Leonsberg, where we take the boat on the Suriname River. We sail along the Commewijne district to Braamspunt. Along the way, we pass landmarks such as Fort Nieuw Amsterdam, the confluence of the Suriname and Commewijne rivers, mangrove forests, countless coastal birds, and perhaps even dolphins and capuchin monkeys.

Evening Adventure and Sea Turtles
As night falls, the group is gathered, and the guide gives a brief explanation about the turtles and their nesting process. The WWF guidelines are also reviewed, including the use of red light to prevent disturbing the sea turtles. The adventure begins as we search for turtles. After following the entire nesting process, we return to the boat and travel back to the city, enriched by a unique experience.

WWF Guidelines
During the visit to the sea turtles, our company follows the guidelines of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to prevent disturbance during the sea turtles' nesting process. Guides are trained to adhere to these rules and will explain them to the guests.
