Back in time: The most beautiful plantation tours in Suriname 2026

The 5 Most Beautiful Plantation Tours in Suriname 2026
Suriname is full of stories. The most beautiful ones can be discovered on the old plantations along the rivers. Every place has something special: impressive buildings, tranquil landscapes, or people who are happy to share their history. As a local, I’m always surprised by how special these places are. That’s why I’ve listed my five favorite plantation experiences for you. If you’re looking for peace, culture, and a touch of adventure, you really don’t want to miss this.

1. Frederiksdorp – History on the River
As soon as you dock at Frederiksdorp, you’ll immediately feel it: this is a special place. Once a coffee plantation, now a charming mini-village with white wooden houses and an old prison. Everything has been beautifully restored and exudes history. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time a few centuries. I recommend combining this tour with Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam and Mariënburg. That way, you’ll truly experience the full story of Commewijne. The best part of this former plantation is that you can also stay overnight at the resort! In comfortable cabanas or colonial buildings. Isn’t that wonderful?

👉 Tour tip: Combine Frederiksdorp with Rust en Werk (Rest and Work) and Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam. Whether you just want a day trip to Frederiksdorp or an overnight stay, it’s all possible!

2. Mariënburg – The Story of Sugar
Once the largest sugarcane plantation in Suriname, now a place that feels a bit mysterious. You walk among old factory towers, abandoned railway tracks, and ruined walls. It’s quiet, but if you listen, you can almost hear the whispers of the past. This is one of those places that truly moves you, precisely because everything is still there as it was. Go here with a guide who can really make you feel the story. We have a wonderful bus tour that takes you not only to Mariënburg but also to various plantations.

👉 Tour tip: Hop on the Commewijne bus tour and experience all the highlights of Commewijne!

3. Peperpot – Nature and heritage in one
Peperpot is a perfect blend of nature and history. As you walk past the old plantation buildings, you’ll hear birds singing and might even spot monkeys in the trees. The walking trails are easily accessible, and you’ll get a beautiful glimpse into how the coffee and cocoa plantations used to work. This place feels peaceful and timeless. Highly recommended for anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle.

4. Bakkie – Small village, big story
Bakkie may be small, but you’ll feel the soul of Suriname there. The local museum, art gallery, and personal stories make this visit truly special. Everything has been set up and maintained by a local family who lovingly share their history. You can tell this isn’t just a tourist stop, but a place with heart and character. Ideal if you enjoy small-scale, authentic experiences.

5. Coronie – From cotton to coconut and an oasis of tranquility
Coronie is a place you won’t soon forget. This coastal district was once known for its cotton plantations, but after the decline of the cotton industry, it became the home of Suriname’s coconut production. Today, you still see this everywhere: vast rows of coconut palms, wooden houses that recall times gone by, and dirt roads where life seems to move at a different pace.

There are no longer large plantation complexes here like in Commewijne, but that’s precisely what makes Coronie so unique. It’s peaceful, pure, and charming in its simplicity. Stop along the way in Totness or Burnside, chat with a local, and sample something freshly made with coconut. You’ll feel it right away: here you’re completely away from it all.

👉 Tour tip: Explore Coronie as part of our District Tour and experience the true Surinamese countryside.

Why these tours?
Because they make you feel something. You discover the history, experience the culture, and watch the landscape change. Each place has its own character. Some are impressive, others quiet and peaceful. But each one shows you Suriname as it truly is.

Curious which tour is best for you? Let me know. I’d love to help you find your perfect Suriname experience.
