Kumalu is located opposite the Tapawatra rapids, one of the widest and most beautiful rapids in Suriname!

This beautiful tropical resort is special because of its small scale and the fact that the host (also co-founder) belongs to the local Maroon community.

🌊 Water Levels & Seasons

River water levels vary by season and can differ significantly from year to year.

During the rainy season, heavy rainfall can cause water levels to rise considerably. As a result, rapids such as the Tapawatra Rapids may be less visible than shown in photographs.

During periods of extreme drought, water levels may become unusually low. This can result in longer boat journeys and, on certain stretches, passengers may be required to briefly disembark so the boat can safely navigate the rapids.

As conditions vary from year to year, we recommend contacting us in advance if swimming at the rapids is an important part of your travel plans.

Transportation

  • Transport: Private air-conditioned bus & motorized canoe
  • Departure from Paramaribo: Approximately 08:00–08:30 AM
  • Travel time to Atjoni: Approximately 3 hours
  • Boat trip to Kumalu: Approximately 4 to 5 hours

During the dry season, the boat trip may take longer due to lower water levels.

* During periods of low water levels (usually towards the end of the major dry season), an earlier departure around 07:00 AM may be necessary. This will be communicated to you in advance.
