Day 1 – Arrival at Bigi Pan

After arriving in Nickerie, you depart by boat towards the resort. Once you step onto the boat, you leave the busy world behind and can fully relax while enjoying the beautiful scenery around you. Upon arrival, you are warmly welcomed and your stay in the middle of the nature reserve begins. Around sunset, you head back onto the water for one of the most beautiful moments of the day. During the evening excursion, keep your eyes open for some of the reptiles living in the area.

Day 2 – Early morning in nature

Life in Bigi Pan starts early. During the morning excursion, you will see the birds taking flight as the area slowly comes to life again. Afterwards, you can enjoy a relaxing morning before returning by boat to the jetty.

Day 1 – Arrival at Bigi Pan

You depart from Paramaribo towards Nickerie with a driver. The guide will meet you upon arrival at Bigi Pan. Restroom stops are made along the way. The drive to Nickerie takes approximately 4 hours.

The program for day 1 is similar to the 2-day tour and includes the boat transfer to the resort, welcome reception and a sunset evening excursion.

Day 2 – Bigi Pan at its best

During the 3-day tour, you have more time today to fully enjoy Bigi Pan. In the afternoon, you take a boat excursion through the nature reserve and, depending on the season, you may also visit the resting areas of migratory birds. Did you know that migratory birds often prefer to return to exactly the same nesting spot every year?

Important to know

  • Optional activities such as crab catching must be reserved in advance
  • Flamingos and scarlet ibises are usually visible from October through April

Please note: The transfer to Bigi Pan is provided by a local driver born and raised in Nickerie. Along the way, you will have the opportunity to experience more of the districts. The driver enjoys sharing personal stories and information about the region. Stops are made in Saramacca, Coronie and Nieuw-Nickerie, where you can also visit the famous sea wall. Please note that this is a driver and not a professional guide. She has more than 40 years of experience on the Paramaribo–Nickerie route. You will be dropped off and picked up at the jetty.

  • Departure from Paramaribo: between 07:00 and 08:00 hrs *
  • Travel time to Nickerie: approx. 4 hours (depending on weather, traffic and road conditions)
  • Boat transfer to Akira Resort: approx. 45 to 60 minutes
  • Return at the jetty: around 12:30 hrs

Can I drive there myself?

Yes, you can drive yourself to the Akira Overwater Resort jetty. You will be met there at an agreed time and your car can be safely parked at the location.

You can spot numerous species, including herons, pelicans, osprey, caimans and special migratory birds. Bigi Pan is home to as many as 122 bird species, of which 72 are present year-round, including the iconic scarlet ibis and brown pelicans.
