Program
Day 1:
- 08:00 depart from Paramaribo
- Travel time +/- 4 hours
- Stop in the Saramacca district, Groningen
- Visit to the fishing harbor Boskamp
- Stop in the Coronie district for a tour and lunch
- Approximately 15:00 we will navigate the Nickerie River (2-day tour)
- Dinner
Day 2:
- Breakfast at the hotel
- Tour of downtown Nickerie (the guide does not stay with the guests in the same accommodation. He will arrange a time to meet with the guests)
- Nickerie Sea Dike
- Visit to a rice mill
- Lunch
- Return to Paramaribo around 17:00
3-Day Tour
The program for Day 1 is the same, except we will navigate the Nickerie River on Day 2.
On Day 2, we will visit the sea dike, the rice mill, and take a boat trip on the Nickerie River.
On Day 3, we will return to Paramaribo.
This is a relaxed tour. It’s good to know that Nickerie closes in the afternoon for their siesta.

General information
The Journey
The Nickerie/Bigi Pan tour starts in Paramaribo and includes various interesting stops. The first stop is Groningen, the main village of Saramacca, where Dutch farmers settled in 1845.
Next, you will visit the fishing harbor Boskamp, where fish is traded and smoked. The tour then continues to Coronie. Coronie is known for its mangrove forests, as well as its traditional wooden architecture and authentic 'slave houses'. These houses are historic buildings dating back to the time of slavery and are considered an important cultural heritage of Suriname.
After a local lunch, you will continue the journey along Wageningen, Henarpolder, and a banana plantation to Nickerie. In Nieuw Nickerie, you will visit the Sea Dike and an important Hindu Temple, followed by dinner in the city.
After breakfast, you will explore the nature reserve 'Bigi Pan', an extensive area with 122 species of coastal birds, including the scarlet ibis, osprey, and waders. The return journey to Paramaribo begins after the boat trip, with a lunch break in Coronie before you head back to the capital in the afternoon.
