❓Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How large are the groups?
We usually work with small to medium-sized groups so everyone can comfortably enjoy the boat trip and fishing experience.
Do I need fishing experience?
No, this tour is suitable for both beginners and experienced anglers. The guide will gladly assist you during the fishing activities.
What if it rains during the tour?
Rain is part of Suriname’s tropical climate and actually makes the nature even greener and more vibrant. Most rain showers are short and often followed by sunshine again.
The tours generally continue as planned, and our guides make sure the experience remains as enjoyable as possible.
Is this tour suitable for children?
Yes, children are welcome under parental supervision. Please keep in mind that the tour starts early and involves a long day on the water.
What is the Brokopondo Reservoir?
The Brokopondo Reservoir, formerly known as the Prof. Dr. Ir. W.J. van Blommenstein Lake, is one of the largest lakes in Suriname. It was created after the construction of the Afobaka Dam in the Suriname River and covers approximately 135,000 hectares, almost the size of the Dutch province of Utrecht.
Today, the area is known for its impressive nature, vast open waters, and excellent sport fishing opportunities.
Why is the reservoir so special?
What makes the reservoir unique are the mysterious treetops still rising above the water. This impressive scenery creates an almost surreal landscape in the middle of Suriname’s interior.
Additionally, the lake is a popular destination for sport fishermen because of the many predatory fish living there.
Which fish can I catch during the tour?
During the fishing tour, we mainly target:
- Toekoenari (Peacock Bass), a strong and popular sport fish
- Piranha, known for its sharp teeth and aggressive bites
- Possibly other local fish species depending on the season and conditions
Are piranhas dangerous?
Piranhas live in the reservoir, but attacks on humans are extremely rare. During fishing trips they are regularly caught, although many anglers release them because they contain little meat and many bones.
How do we fish during the tour?
During the tour, we fish from a professional sport fishing boat using artificial bait. At suitable fishing spots, the boat slowly drifts using an electric motor while actively targeting Toekoenari.
The guide will gladly assist you with tips and fishing techniques along the way.
What does the sport fishing boat look like?
The professional fishing boat is comfortable and equipped with:
- 90HP outboard motor
- Electric trolling motor
- Fishfinder
- GPS
- Sun canopy for extra comfort
Where does the fishing trip start?
The trip starts from the boat ramp near Afobaka. From there, we sail past the impressive dam and further onto the Van Blommenstein Lake towards different fishing locations.
