In this area, many Maroon villages, inhabited by descendants of escaped slaves, are nestled. The welcoming population takes great pride in their culture and is eager to introduce you to their ancient customs. Due to the isolated life deep in the rainforest, these villages have remained untouched. Impressive rapids can be found in this part of the river, and during low water, small sandy beaches form.
