General information
Departure from Leonsberg Pier
At 4:30 PM, we depart on a traditional tent boat from the pier at Leonsberg, heading out onto the Suriname River. From here, we sail along the Commewijne district towards the former plantation Johanna Margaretta. The journey to the plantation takes about an hour. Along the way, we see the transition from the Suriname River into the Commewijne River and pass by Fort Nieuw Amsterdam.
Dolphin Spotting
While on our way to Johanna Margaretta, we will also be searching for river dolphins. The brackish rivers of Suriname are home to the Guyana dolphins, which are easily recognizable by their pink bellies. These dolphins are often seen in groups while catching fish. They are very playful and curious, so there's a good chance they'll come quite close.
Visit to the Former Plantation Johanna and Margareta
Once we arrive at the plantation, we take a walk towards the home of Mrs. Dipai, where we enjoy freshly baked roti and a refreshing drink. Mrs. Dipai’s house is situated along the main canal.
Caiman Spotting
After filling our bellies, we board small boats and head into the canal towards the swamp area. Before we reach the swamp, the boats must first be pulled up a slope using rails. Once we arrive at the swamp, we start searching for spectacled caimans. When one is spotted, the boatman will attempt to catch it in an animal-friendly manner. You will have plenty of time to take photos of the caiman, and the guide will share interesting facts about them. Caiman spotting takes about 40 minutes to an hour.
Afterwards, we sail back towards Leonsberg Pier, where we will arrive around 9:00 PM. Here, you will reflect on an amazing tour full of adventures experienced with Orange Travel.
